Not only is the Tour of California the state’s largest annual spectator sport event – and one of the most prestigious in the cycling world – it’s also the one that covers the most ground. Every May, professional cyclists compete in a seven-stage, Tour de France–style road race that stretches over more than 600 miles of prime California property from the coastline to the High Sierra. A trail of host cities — such as Long Beach, San Jose, Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe — link the race and feature the daily Lifestyle Festival Expo adjacent to the finish line. The Amgen Tour of California also includes a 150-mile, three-stage women’s race as part of the action.
